Eventually, you will want to be able to do more on your VPS. Read this short guide and learn how to expand the use of your virtual private server (VPS) – how to install apps for web applications.
Installing new apps onto your VPS isn’t difficult, but you must take care to do it correctly. There are different methods depending on whether you use a Windows Virtual Private Server or the more common Linux servers.
First, you need to connect to your server with an FTP program and copy the application package to be installed from your local computer to the server.
To use the FTP client to upload the installation package you need to configure it to connect with your server. This requires that you input the host name, the FTP user name and the FTP password. Servers that are configured to require information such as the start directory or port number will need those as well.
Once the FTP client is set-up you can connect to your server and upload the installation file.
You can also install apps by downloading the installation package to your virtual private server using remote desktop. The installation pack is usually in the form of an exe. file, but not always.
Windows Remote Desktop Connection requires you to input your servers IP address, your user name and password.
Linux Virtual Private Server (VPS) – installing apps
Linux servers generally require you to gain root or administration access. To gain access you need to make a new user name. This user name will be able to do almost anything within the server. You need to be careful because messing up a server is easy to do and it’s hard to repair the resulting damage, if you make a mistake.
There are a couple ways to get root access.
Linux servers that are fully managed or managed usually use either Gateway or cPanel to work with files. The first thing to do is enable rootaccess. Do this by clicking the Settings option in the server’s control panel. Then ensure that the Enable admin (root and sudo) access is enabled and click save.
Once connected you need to run the command: sudo su -. Then enter the server’s password and you’re ready to run root user commands for your server.
Other types of Linux servers require you to connect through your SSHand run the command su -. Then run the server’s password and your set.
Once you’re set-up, you need to create a directory for your app. After the directory is made, you create a new configuration file. You will need the documentation from your hosting provider for this to make sure you use the correct configurations.
You may also need to set-up a server for your app and configure the app itself. Again these things depend on you host provider because different programs call for different procedures.
